Math Masters is a one-on-one math intervention program designed to support students—particularly those with suspected or diagnosed dyscalculia—through a structured, skills-based approach. Rooted in the principles of Orton-Gillingham math instruction, Math Masters breaks down abstract mathematical concepts into clear, concrete steps that support deep understanding and skill mastery.

Why Orton-Gillingham for Math?

While Orton-Gillingham is traditionally known for literacy intervention, its principles—explicit instruction, sequential progression, multisensory techniques, and individualized pacing—are highly effective in math instruction as well. This makes it especially powerful for students who struggle with numeracy, math anxiety, or dyscalculia. Our tutors are trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach to math, ensuring that instruction is consistent, cumulative, and tailored to each learner.

What Makes Math Masters Unique?

  • Multi-Module Design: The program is divided into manageable learning modules, allowing students to progress at a pace that suits their needs.

  • Scaffolded Instruction: Each session builds on prior knowledge, gradually increasing in complexity while reinforcing foundational skills.

  • Skills-Based Focus: Rather than delivering math content strictly by grade level, Math Masters emphasizes essential math skills and conceptual understanding that form the backbone of lifelong numeracy; as students progress, we build upon those skills.

  • Confidence-Building Approach: Our goal is to empower students with tools, strategies, and a mindset that help them feel capable and confident in math.

Although not curriculum-based, Math Masters aligns with Manitoba’s K–12 math curriculum. Tutors have access to grade-level outcomes and consult them to ensure students are supported in ways that complement their classroom experiences.

Math Masters is ideal for:

  • Students with dyscalculia or math-based learning differences

  • Students struggling with math anxiety or gaps in understanding

  • Learners seeking foundational skill reinforcement or individualized attention

  • WHEN DO SESSIONS TAKE PLACE?

    Session dates for the 2024/25 school year are as follows:

    • September 3rd – December 13th (15 weeks)

    • January 6th – March 21st (11 weeks)

    • April 7th – June 27th (12 weeks)

    • July 7th -   August 22nd (8 weeks)

    Students may sign up for the following session upon completion of their current session.

  • Tutoring Hours:

    Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m

  • WHERE DOes TUTORING TAKE PLACE?

Tutoring takes place at our Administrative Office at 617 Erin Street.

  • IS TUTORING DONE IN A GROUP?

No, our tutoring is one-on-one. Our one-on-one instructional approach allows each individual to learn at their own pace based on their own specific needs.

  • HOW MUCH IS TUTORING?

As a non-profit organization we are committed to providing low-cost tutoring services. Our Math Masters program is $35.00 per session, plus a one-time administration fee of $75.00. We understand that financial constraints can be a challenge, so if cost is a concern, please reach out to us to explore available subsidies.
